Investment Managers

We apply the principles of Buffettology to screen the managers we have selected for our clients.  We monitor tenure, how long our managers have been at the funds they are managing, and how long they have been in the business. We determine whether or not they eat their own cooking by investing personally in their own funds. We also consider their performance relative to an appropriate index and the cost of their respective services.

The following chart is shining a light on some of the key factors we consider to be important considerations when selecting our short list of equity managers.

Portfolio metrics were gathered from Paltrack for the period ending December 31, 2012.

Fixed income requires special attention so we go to specialist Dan Janis for a global portfolio of high yielding investments.

There are more packaged money products trading in Canada (14,514) than there are individual securities listed on the TSX (1,577). Approximately 3% of the funds traded have a 10 year track record of 8% or more. Approximately 1.3% of the funds have a 10 year track record of 10% or more. Of those 1.3%, how many have the original portfolio manager managing the fund? Likely less than 1%! (Mutual Fund data provided by Morningstar Paltrack 12/31/2012, securities info from the TSX website.)

Through our relationship with FundEX Investments Inc., we're able to access thousands of products from Guaranteed Income Certificates (GIC's), to Mutual Funds using Exchange Traded Funds, (ETF's), Secured Notes, and Segregated Funds. We have access to a full range of products on a stand alone or self directed basis, and we can access product in many different ways using Socially Responsible Investments (SRI's), or Separately Managed Accounts (SMA's), Wrap Accounts, and through Advisor Portfolio Services (APS), where fees are unbundled and negotiated individually.

At the root of each of the many 1,000's of portfolio alternatives are the underlying securities. Security selections in our client investment fund portfolios are made one at a time by the portfolio managers we have selected who are operating independently of one another.  We bring all of those managers and their portfolio selections together integrating top quality portfolio management into the core of the Talisman service offering.
